Horse breeds for children

The Shetland pony is generally known as the perfect pony for children. This is mainly due to its small size. However, the temperament of a Shetland pony is often less suitable for young children and beginners. These ponies can be very stubborn and a little cheeky! So which ponies or horses are actually suitable for beginners or children? I've listed the five best breeds for children for you!

1. The Welsh Pony

The Welsh Pony is a favourite among young riders. This is because Welsh Ponies are often very friendly and reliable. They are not too big, which makes children feel comfortable on their backs. Furthermore, Welsh Ponies are incredibly smart!

2. The New Forest Pony

The New Forest Pony is known for its gentle nature and patience. These ponies are frequently found at riding schools because they are good with beginners. They are not too big and are calm and gentle, but the New Forest can also adapt well to the rider's level.

3. The Haflinger

Haflingers – who doesn't know them! With their beautiful golden coats and light manes, they really catch the eye. Haflingers have a calm and patient nature and are often found at riding schools because they are very reliable. They’re also quite strong, making Haflingers suitable for young children as well as older children.

4. The Connemara

The Connemara Pony is known for its courage and friendly nature. They are often small enough for children to mount easily, yet strong enough to carry them safely. These ponies are true all-rounders! Whether in lessons or out on hacks, they can do it all!

5. The Icelandic Horse

Icelandic horses are calm and patient, making them great for kids and beginners. They're not too big, but not too small either. Older kids and even adults can ride them too! Icelandic horses also have a special gait called the tölt. Some Icelandic horses can also do another gait called the flying pace.

What’s your favourite pony/horse breed?

From reading this the Welsh pony sounded the best!
The I once had an Icelandic (I think)and he was very stubborn.
My personal favorite breed is either the Friesian or Mustang.

All haflinger horses ive ridden where stubborn, strong and i would def not put my kids on them haha.

We are looking in to Welsh ponies for the kids, but i love fjord horses to for kids. But every breed has some stubborn horses or exceptional sweet horses.

I am just happy there isn't a Shetland pony on the list. I grew up with a Shetland, though he is still a great pony, very resilient. He is ornery. I would of preferred a fjord or icelandic or Connemara.

I have a bunch of them and can relate: a little Welsh, a Connemara, an Icelandic horse and my first one was a Haflinger 😅

I grew up riding an icelandic, Old man with all kinds of problems and pains that the owner didnt realise at the time. Flung me around like a frisbee, taught me a lot.

I love Icelandics above the rest but one Amazing pony not mentioned is the Welsh Mountain Pony. They are smart, easy to work with and train, and can be very affectionate. I owned several that I used for riding lessons and a pony ring. They all averaged 11-12 hands so a great height for kids and they had good solid bone which allowed them to carry up to 100 pounds if needed.

I personally believe that Quarters Horses are the best breed, especially if crossed with a shorter Clyde

I Grew up to love horses by my old Welsh Mountain Pony (Trixie), shes still alive and she's in her 30s. I personally recommend Welsh pony's for kids, they are small but Hardy, and the other breeds of Welsh are amazing too.
