Breed spotlight: Connemara pony

History of the Connemara

Connemara ponies originate from the Connemara region on the west coast of Ireland. This region is known for its National Park, in Galway, where Connemara ponies roam freely. The landscape of this National Park is incredibly diverse: there are mountains, hills, meadows and lakes. I’d recommend having a look at some photos of Connemara National Park, as it looks absolutely stunning!

The region, Connemara, has shaped the characteristics of the Connemara pony. This is because the region is almost completely cut off from the rest of Ireland by two large lakes. Due to the harsh conditions in their habitat, the ponies have developed characteristics for which they are still known today. Examples include their stamina, suppleness, jumping ability, and sure-footedness (being steady on their feet). You can still see these characteristics in the Connemara pony today!
The history of the Connemara pony itself is also very interesting. The original Celtic pony, crossed with northern breeds, is regarded as the ancestor of the Connemara. Later, further breeding took place with, for example, Arabians and Spanish horses. Nowadays, the studbook is closed. This means that breeding is restricted to 100 percent Connemaras.

The character of the Connemara

The Connemara has many wonderful traits. They are very intelligent, which means they can be a little stubborn. This breed is also friendly and loves working with people. Connemaras bond easily with their riders, so you can quickly develop a good relationship with this pony. The Connemara certainly isn’t averse to hard work either! The Connemara is originally a true mountain pony, which means that this breed generally doesn't rush into things. They’re also incredibly curious!
The Connemara has a good build and is quite strong. Combined with their stubbornness, this pony can sometimes be difficult to handle. Of course, there are also riding schools where Connemaras are used as children’s ponies, and this works very well. A pony’s characteristics naturally depend on how the animal is treated, so this is just a general overview.
