Horses have been our best friends for thousands of years. Whilst they were once used for transport, farming and even war, we now know them primarily as our beloved animals. There are hundreds of horse breeds worldwide. Some are known for their speed, others for their strength, appearance or temperament. But which horse breeds are the most popular? In this blog, you’ll discover five of the best-known and most popular horse breeds in the world.

The Arabian Thoroughbred

The Arabian Thoroughbred is one of the oldest horse breeds in the world. The breed originates from the Middle East and is known for its elegant appearance, refined head and high tail carriage. Arabian horses are intelligent, energetic and have excellent stamina. This makes them very well-suited to long rides and endurance races.

A notable fact is that the Arabian horse has played a significant role in the development and improvement of various other horse breeds. Consequently, Arabian blood can be found in the pedigrees of many modern horse breeds.

The Friesian horse

The Friesian horse is perhaps one of the best-known horse breeds from the Netherlands. This beautiful, black horse stands out for its often long mane and tail. Friesian horses have a powerful yet elegant appearance.

They are widely used for dressage and carriage driving. Friesians are also popular in films and television series, as they look impressive and almost fairy-tale-like. The breed originates from Friesland, the Netherlands, and is now known all over the world.

The American Quarter Horse

The American Quarter Horse is one of the most popular horse breeds in the United States. The horse has a muscular build and is known for its tremendous speed over short distances. The name refers to the "Quarter Mile", a race covering approximately 400 metres. They are widely used in Western equestrian sports, such as reining, barrel racing and cutting. They are also versatile horses that are well-suited to trail riding and other forms of equestrian sport.

The English Thoroughbred

The English Thoroughbred is particularly famous for horse racing. The breed has been specifically bred for speed and has a slender, athletic build with long legs. During races, these horses can reach very high speeds.

As well as racing, Thoroughbreds are also used in disciplines such as eventing and show jumping. They are often energetic and sensitive and therefore require a rider who can handle their temperament well.

The Shetland pony

The Shetland pony is small in stature but incredibly strong. This pony originates from the Shetland Islands in Scotland. There, it had to adapt to a cold, windy climate and scarce food supplies.

Shetland ponies are very popular with children and are also used for carriage driving. They are intelligent and strong, but can sometimes be quite headstrong. It is precisely this headstrong nature that makes them particularly appealing to many horse lovers.
