With its noble head, sleek body, elegant movements and sensitive character, most horse enthusiasts recognise this breed immediately. This blog is about a popular desert resident: the Arabian horse. Enjoy reading!
Origin of the Arabian horse
The Arabian horse, or simply Arabian, is one of the oldest and most noble horse breeds in the world. The breed is probably more than 5,000 years old and originates from the Arabian Peninsula, where they are believed to be descended from the wild horses that once lived in the Arabian Desert. They were tamed by Bedouins, nomads who travelled through the desert. These nomads later bred the first Arabians. These horses (especially the mares) were highly sought after. To prevent them from being stolen, the Bedouins let their horses sleep with them in their tents at night. Later, the breed spread throughout the rest of the world, mainly through trade and war. The breed has also had a major influence on the development and characteristics of other horse breeds, such as the Haflinger, the English Thoroughbred, the Anglo-Arabian, the Morgan and the Welsh Pony.
High-spirited, but people-oriented: the character of the Arabian horse
The Arabian horse is known for its spirited character. Yet they are usually very friendly and people-oriented. They are spirited, but they quickly respect people, especially if you have built a bond with them.
The appearance of the Arabian horse
Arabian horses have a narrow, noble head with the typical “kink”, large eyes and nostrils, and a high tail. They appear in chestnut, black, bay and grey, with grey being the most common. They have an average height of 1.50 metres at the withers.
Born athletes
Due to their history in the desert and strong lungs, Arabians have great stamina, which makes them very suitable for endurance riding, for example. But actually, they can be used for almost all branches of the sport.
