General breed information
The Noriker (also known as the Pinzgauer) is a medium-heavy cold-blooded breed originating from the Austrian Alps. For centuries, it was bred as a working horse for agriculture, forestry, and the transport of heavy loads in mountainous terrain. The breed is characterised by its powerful build, calm temperament, and strong willingness to work.
The Noriker is founded on the bloodlines of five stallions: Vulkan, Nero, Diamant, Schaunitz, and Elmar. Each line has its own distinct traits. The majority of the breed (over 50% of the offspring) comes from the Vulkan line, noted for its heavier types. The Nero line produces more refined horses, while the Diamant line is associated with typical draught horse characteristics. Schaunitz descendants are known for their livelier temperament, and the Elmar line is recognised for its more elegant type, often displaying Baroque features.
A striking characteristic of the Noriker is its variety of coat colours, most commonly chestnut and black. The breed is also well known for its spotted coats. Other markings, such as tobiano, occur as well, though they are less common.
