General breed information
The Welsh Cob is the largest type within the Welsh pony breeds. They typically stand between 1.45 and 1.55 meters at the withers, though some individuals can grow even taller. Thanks to their size and strength, Welsh Cobs are perfectly suited to carry adult riders, making them popular.
The breed's origins date back to somewhere between the 18th and 19th centuries. Welsh Cobs developed from the hardy Welsh Mountain Pony, with influences from breeds such as the Norfolk Roadster, Hackney, Arabian, and even the Shire horse. Early on, they were primarily used as working horse, valued for their endurance, strength, and courage.
Welsh Cobs are known for their versatility and are successful across many equestrian sports. They possess a strong and expressive walk, trot, and canter, and they are also capable jumpers. With their calm disposition and strong work ethic, Welsh Cobs are reliable partners whether in competitive arenas or for recreational riding. They are solidly built, combining power with agility, and they are equally admired for their kind but spirited temperament.
Welsh Cobs come in a variety of colors, though darker shades are the most commonly seen. A wide range of white markings are accepted, but tobiano and leopard spotting is not permitted.
In 1901, the first official studbook, the Welsh Pony and Cob Society, was established. To better organize the different types, the breed was divided into sections. The classification system recognized today, including the designation of the Welsh Cob as Section D, was introduced in 1949.
